We have taken a look at the Das Keyboard Model S Professional and it is an impressive piece of hardware. Can the silent version stack up against the original? To start off, the name is a bit of a misnomer, the Model S Professional Silent isn’t completely silent.

Under the hood, the keyboard uses Cherry MX Brown key-switches, which provide a tactile feel, but a softer sound than the Blue key-switches the original used. It has a 104-key layout, includes a two-port USB 2.0 hub, has support for full n-key rollover over via PS/2 adapter, and 6-key rollover over USB. It comes with an extra long 2 meter USB cable.

The appearance is pretty much identical to the original Model S Professional, and that is not a bad thing. It is built with care, and looks great with it’s modern minimalistic approach. You won’t find multimedia keys here, as you would see on cheaper OEM keyboards, but they aren’t missed. With the subtle blue LED accenting the glossy black finish, it simply looks fantastic.

The question is that with such a great original Model S Professional, why would you want to get the silent softer version? If you work with noise-sensitive people, or are working at night and don’t want to disturb sleepers, then this keyboard would fit the bill.

Those that enjoyed the “clickity clack” of the original Model S Professional will be a little disappointed. If you have circumstances that require softer key-strokes then this is perfect, but otherwise the original Model S Professional is the recommended buy.
